So basically thats the construction of our player conference, which takes me out of the subjective mode. Thank you very much. And now youre ranked from one to 15. Ive worked with him and a year or two later, he was the best salesman at the company. Every aspect of almost every practice, its a competition. And in changing that and sending then in the right direction all of a sudden a substandard player goes to a different level because now shes finally accountable for performance, whereas earlier she had a narrative that protected her from being responsible and accountable, and now all of a sudden we expose that, and now shes selected to be more accountable and her game goes to a completely different level. Cause you know, all you did for me is tell me this wasnt good enough. A lot of those championships and gold medals were won with players right out of my program. Coach Dorrance: I just finished reading a book and Im going to recommend it to all of your listeners right now. And now its the free throw line and back, mid stripe and back, other free throw line and back, end of the court and back. Below are some of the insights Dorrance shared during our chat, edited for length and clarity. Every one of my church teaches. Its basically about accountability. actually neither that ancient, nor Chinese. Almost every single time he would tell everyone in the room to fire the bottom 10% of their workforce. Some want to be exempt. And all of a sudden, in a New York Times magazine years ago, there was a woman that was writing about her experiences studying Russian literature at Columbia. Now is the period to escape the protection of loving parents that dont want you to get hurt. You have 4 years to get ready for the chaos at the university. And she was telling a great story, and she said when she was at Columbia they just hired a Russian exile poet by the name of Joseph Brodsky. When we call them and ask them about the character of their kid, theyre not going to say oh my god, the kids toxic. And all of a sudden I saw this transformation that was phenomenal. For example, the first core value is "we don't whine." For example, the first core value is we dont whine. It is paired with the following quote from George Bernard Shaw: The true joy in life is to be a force of fortune instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. It would make you think twice before complaining about a lack of playing time, or anything else. You see, in this first slide, the parents are screaming at the kid. And one of the things Ive been thinking about a lot lately is, is a leader made or is a leader born? So please grab Arthur Blanks book and read it and then take it to heart. Its a huge mistake to recruit talent. Hes won 22x National Championships, has one of the most successful coaching records in the history of athletics, leading his team during a 101-game unbeaten streak and coaching 13 different women to a total of 20 National Player of the Year awards. Were not going to memorize poetry. Anson: Self-belief. Its what business can do for America. And so what you asked earlier about this cauldron thing, we have three basic tools that we use that I think separate us. So theyre not allowed to touch coachability. Your function is the bottom line. I mean, thats why it drives me nuts, you know, when I look at all these different people that claim to be developing leaders. They leave to shower immediately. And one of the things that really interested me the most about you, Anson, after reading about you and talking to Lindsay Henson here at Eagle Hill, and one of the phrases that she associates most with you and the team culture, was refuse to lose. Lindsay said refuse to lose really stays with her today, and not just as a memory, but really and truly as her mindset and how she shows up in all aspects of her life. And again, as I mentioned earlier, I read reams of business books. And of course theyre going to agree with me, I think I am better. Podcasts for me are great. So now what I do, if theyre below that black line, I meet with them, I talk about how wonderful it would be for them to transfer to Stanford and destroy their program. You know, shes a great athlete and shell kick everyones ass on the field, but outside the field shes a royal pain in the ass. And youll appreciate this because youre a woman. Anson: Because now all of a sudden Im not being critical of them. You develop them in an environment where theyre competing like theres no tomorrow. What have you found on the developing coaches side that maybe would, if I was a business owner out there thinking about how do I build my senior leadership team? Anson: Well, basically I had this girlI shared the data with her, and shes sitting across from me in cold silence, and Im thinking oh, my gosh, I shouldnt have shared this with her. So if a kid comes in and they havent done very well that season, and this is a post season review, they all have a protective narrative thats usually, in my environment, organized and I guess constructed in a loop with their parents. Anson: Well, actually, I mean, Ive got a lot of others that I can throw out there for you, because let me tell you about potential. These have been developed over the years. Because if I can deconstruct the persons excuse-ridden personal narrative, I can help them get to their potential. Basically these human wrecks, because the parents have absolutely spoiled them. You criticized me here. Being best on my team is good enough for where you want to go. I was just talking to a restaurant owner who was struggling to find the right mix of workers for whatever reason that might be. Anson: I dont want to give speeches anymore. Then all of a sudden. Because as long as every kid I coach has an excuse for why they dont start or play or travel, they will never be able to change their place. The girls you get to coach, and across college athletics, all the players that come through programs are going to move on at some point and join a workforce and work their way through and hopefully become leaders. One is the cauldron. Anson: And you speak to a parent, you know, theyre doing the same thing. Think about that for a second. Its my laboratory of the human spirit for leadership development, which is the most failed leadership platform in the world, because Ive never developed a frigging leader out of it. And thats where we run into problems, too, because we see this kid that has huge talent. But when I played for you, I could feel the love between the criticism and around the criticism. And I loved it. The Tar Heels' record under Dorrance stood at 809-67-36 (.887 winning percentage) over 33 seasons at the end of the 2017 season. And every one of our players, basically, as peer evaluation, evaluates every kid in the program. He is currently the head coach of the women's soccer program at the University of North Carolina. And so thats my main job. Weve got all kinds of missions, a part of the mission is the athletic one, but believe it or not within this culture of a university context, its actually the third most important. I can sit there and post the numbers, and now what happens to my relationship, its me and the players against the numbers. Im looking forward to chatting with you. But a lot of what goes on, I think, that takes us and our teams to our potential is our capacity to motivate the players that are in our environment. And as impressive as that is, h And then he patiently waits for, you know, this self-righteous CEO to finish and then he basically calmly says, well, if youd taken that energy that you invested in your bottom performer and you invested that in your top performers, your bottom line would be better. But the thing I learned most from him was how he would calmly sit there and listen to, you know, aggressive self-righteousness and not indict the person with his self-righteous opinion. We had standards in the way I was raised and I knew what was right and wrong. So of course they all go storming into his office and told him, you know, Professor Brodsky, Im sorry, were not going to do this. If theyre below the line and theyre not on scholarship, I try to get them to quit. And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising. My favorite moment, every time I would hear him speak, was when he would tell everyone in the room that every single year fire, the bottom 10% of your workforce, everyone in the room would gasp.
